Philly has long been known for its rich history, fanatical sports fans (E-A-G-L-E-S!), and (of course) the iconic Philly cheesesteak. But to locals, Philly is also home to a treasure trove of culinary thrills. Here are 5 of my favorite East Passyunk must-visits:
- The Dutch
Situated opposite the infamous Singing Fountain, The Dutch offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a cozy, corner location offering a from-scratch menu riffed from classic Pennsylvania Dutch dishes like Reuben corned beef and sauerkraut sandwiches and cobb salads with bright purple red-beet eggs. Avoid the long lines by planning an impromptu mid-week lunch or scheduling a reservation on Tock. One of my faves!
- Bing Bing Dim Sum
A great spin on the traditional dim sum experience. Fun and eclectic decor is matched by delicious and innovative dishes such as cheesesteak bao buns and Jewish chicken wonton noodle soup. Vibrant flavors and a cool ambiance make this a must-visit spot on the Avenue.
- Barcelona Wine Bar
The place to be for those who crave shareable dishes and fantastic wine (or pitchers of sangria!). Featuring an industrial-themed interior and thumping music that spans the gamut from classic house to 80s hits, minutes (and then hours) will fly by as you devour crispy brussel sprouts, spiced beef empanadas, and straight-from-the-oven housemade bread. Delish!
- Gabriella’s Vietnam
James Beard finalist for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic Thanh Nguyen brings the delectable, punchy flavors of Vietnam to East Passyunk Avenue. The quality of preparation featuring all locally sourced ingredients is unmistakable; water fern dumplings, zesty shaken beef, and seafood fried rice with chunks of fresh snow crab are all to die for!
- Mighty Bread Company
From the classic bacon, egg and cheese sammy to prosciutto and mozzarella on ciabatta to buttery chocolate croissants, this hidden, bustling jewel is the ultimate stop for all things hand-held. They also feature an in-store pantry with clever branded items like house-made spice blends, seasonal jams, and toasty granola. Don’t leave without grabbing a crusty French baguette or freshly baked 7-grain loaf to go!
Bon appetit!
